Vice President Kashim Shettima has stepped in to reconcile Benue State Governor, Rev. Hyacinth Iormem Alia with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.

The two leaders have been having very frosty relationship since May 2023, a situation that has factionalised the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress.

Shettima, who was in Makurdi for the wedding of Akume’s son, on Sunday pledged to intervene, saying the issues that have divided the two leaders must be resolved in the interest of the state.

The Vice President said the state is too important to be toyed with, pledging to step in and heal the rift between the two leaders.

“We cannot continue to allow the discord between the elder statesman, Senator George Akume, and the governor of Benue State to fester. What binds us together supersedes whatever divides us,” he said.

However, even at the event, the rift manifested clearly when Akume, who was a former Governor of Benue State, recognised the leadership of the APC faction opposed to Alia and claimed to have installed all the governors after he left office. “We will continue to pray for Alia,” he concluded.

Governor Alia used the event to counsel the couple to live together in unity and support other.
