We’ll Complete 1000 Housing Units By December – Dangiwa
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa says at least 1000 housing units out of those being constructed across the country by the ministry will be completed by December.
The minister, who said the remaining units will be delivered by mid 2025, spoke while briefing the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development during their oversight visit to the ministry.
This is contained in a statement by the ministry’s Director of Information, Badamasi Salisu Haiba, issued on Thursday in Abuja.
He explained that a consortium of developers were contracted to deliver a total of 100,000 housing units all over the federation under the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates programme.
Dangiwa said 20,000 of the units will be in Abuja with the pilot phase at Karsana, where 3,112 housing units are being constructed.
He explained that the developers are to provide financing, land and off-takers for the housing units, while the ministry provides bankable off-takers guarantee to enable the developers access funds to execute the project.
Dangiwa, who made a comprehensive presentation of the work ongoing at the Renewed Hope City site in Karsana to the Senate Committee, stated that the developers have accessed funding through Family Homes funds and other means, and are on site working to ensure they deliver on time.
He informed the senators that committees have been set up to monitor the execution of the project on weekly basis.
The minister during the briefing, presented some documents earlier requested by the Senate Committee, including the activities of the Ministry, budget performance in 2023 and 2024, the housing projects, Urban Renewal and Slum upgrade programme, list of the federal government properties under the ministry, and details of partnership with the private sector, among others.
Responding to questions from journalists, Dangiwa advocated for more funding for the ministry to the tune of N500 billion.
He said that the Ministry was targeting to generate up to N300 billion in two years from the sale of the renewed hope houses.
On his part, the Chairman of the committee on lands, housing and urban development, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said that the visit was to assess the utilisation of funds to the ministry released in the 2023 and 2024 budgets.
Tambuwal thanked the Minister for his cooperation, saying Nigerians are interested in knowing what happened to the monies appropriated by the National Assembly and released by government to ministries and agencies.
Tambuwal appreciated what the ministry has been doing and agreed that it should have more funds to develop more houses, and in the process help to create jobs and distribute wealth to those in the lower achelon of the society.
