By: Ahmed Aminu, Dutse

The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu says Nigerians should learn to adhere to early warning advisories issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to stem flooding.
Addressing a press conference in Dutse, Jigawa State, the DG,

said NiMet’s advisories have a 90% accuracy rate, enabling communities to prepare for potential floods.
Issa-Onilu, who was represented by Mr. Williams Fugu, Director Legal Matters, noted that several states including Jigawa, Niger, Kogi, Rivers, Anambra, and Bayelsa, have suffered severe flooding in recent years due largely to the non adherence to the early alerts by NiMet.
He therefore urged the public to take heed of NiMet’s warnings and work together to prevent flooding by clearing drainage systems and avoiding dumping waste in waterways, and evacuating from flood-prone areas, among others.
The Director-General recalled that N3 billion was shared to states in 2024 for flood prevention and control.
He explained that the visit to Jigawa State was part of a nationwide sensitization and public enlightenment campaign to prop up support for government policies and programmes and engineer patriotism.
