Following widespread criticism and condemnation from across the country, the Chief Security Officer (CSO), Yobe State Government House, Yakubu Zakari Deba, who assaulted a reporter on Thursday, has apologised to the victim and the management of NTA Damaturu.

This was made known in a statement on Friday by the Chairman of the NTA Damaturu Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Aliyu Mohammed Babi.

He said that the CSO, accompanied by the Chairman of the state NUJ, Comrade Rajab Mohammed Ismail, and the Focal Person on Strategy and Digital Communication, Yusuf Ali, met with the assaulted NTA reporter, Baba Gana Kolo, and other staff and management of the station.

“I am personally here to say sorry for my behaviour yesterday, which caused harm to you and embarrassment to other journalists around the vicinity and the state at large. I take full responsibility and seek forgiveness,” Zakari Deba was quoted as saying.

The reconciliation visit followed the intervention of the NUJ Yobe State Council, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Ado, and Commissioner for Information, Home Affairs and Culture, Abdullahi Bego.
