1,000 Couples set for mass wedding in Kano

The Kano State Hisbah Board is set to hold a mass wedding involving 1,000 couples, the Commandant of the board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, has said.According to Sheikh Daurawa, the essence is to reduce the hardships encountered by intending couples in preparing for marriage.

The commandant, however, said that those to participate in the mass wedding must pass through four tests before they qualify for the board’s sponsorship.

“This time around the couples must pass through four different tests which include HIV test, pregnancy test, genotype and drug tests.

“We will not consider anybody that doesn’t pass these tests. We are doing this to assist the couples to live peacefully and have happy marriages.

“If someone is into drugs or has a particular illness, then there is a problem.”

The Hisbah commander explained that the screening and selection would be done at the local government level.

“A total of 20 couples will be selected from each of the 44 LGAs of the state and the remaining 120 couples will be selected by the board,” Sheikh Daurawasaid.

The board had in the past organised similar mass weddings for thousands of couples.

Kano State Government usually takes responsibility for the payment of dowry and purchase of beds, settees and other household items for the couples.
