A special task force set up by the federal government has arrested 115 people in Enugu State over alleged involvement in currency racketeering.
The task force is composed of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Police and Customs.
All the suspects were arrested in a sting operation along Owerri Road in Ogui area of Enugu.
“Preliminary investigation showed that some of the suspects are foreigners from Niger Republic
“The arrest followed a credible intelligence about some bureau de change operators, currency speculators and street hawkers operating illegal foreign exchange markets in that environment.
“Items recovered from them include N110, 700,000.00, $8,368.00, £145.00, €2,725, 900 South African Rands, 32,000.00 CFA, 100 Turkiya, and 500 Bank Mozambique currencies in different denominations.
“A safe abandoned by one of the street hawkers was also recovered,” EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, told newsmen in Abuja.
According to him, the suspects will be charged to court.
