The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, has called on President Bola Tinubu to quickly address factors that triggered the current economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians.
The 36 Speakers made the call in a communique at the end of their general meeting held in Abuja.
The well-attended meeting graced by 29 Speakers of State Houses of Assembly in attendance, deliberated on wide range of issues bordering on good governance in the country.
The communique signed by the chairman of the speakers conference Adebo Ogundoyin, who is the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, said the monetary and fiscal authorities must find appropriate solutions to the falling value of the Naira.
The meeting also decried the hardship being faced by Nigerians as a result of Tinubu’s forex crisis, removal of fuel subsidy and security challenges bedevilling the country.
It, therefore, urged the federal government to initiate sustainable policies and measures to lift Nigeria out of the present economic quagmire.
The speakers conference particularly expressed concerns that in spite of the constitutional provisions that granted financial autonomy to state legislatures, the implementation has been observed in breach across the federation.
On security, the speakers said Tinubu must address the challenge with all seriousness.
“It is paramount to bolster collaborative efforts among security agencies, enhance intelligence gathering mechanisms, and engage in community-oriented policing strategies.”
The speakers also called on relevant stakeholders to comply with all the provisions of the Constitution in all situations and not selectively in breach.
They appealed to political leaders in Rivers State to explore peaceful means to resolve the impasse between the state government and House of Assembly.
