Human Rights group tasks police to investigate attack by thugs in Kano LGA
The Human Rights Network (HRN), Nigeria, has petitioned the police calling for an investigation into an alleged attack by suspected thugs on factory workers in Tudunwada Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State.
The petition was dated August 4, signed by the Country Director of the network, Comrade Haruna Ayagi with reference number HRN/NPC/GEN/V.V192 and titled “Appeal for Intervention/Investigation”.
Ayagi, in the petition addressed to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Bakori, urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation on what he term, “nefarious activities of the council chairperson”,
He alleged that the LGA Chairperson, Hajiya Sa’adaatu Yusha’u, hired the thugs to carry out the attack.
Ayagi said that the petition emanated from a complaint filed by one Mallam Suwidi Umar, a resident of Kofar Yamma Unguwar Rariya Quarters in Tudunwada LGA, who accused the chairperson of using her position on August 29 to hire thugs welding dangerous arms to attack him and his workers.
He alleged that the chairperson was trying to force Umar and his workers to vacate the place which had been given to him by the authorities in 1999.
“We demand thorough investigation and prosecution into the matter to forestall further assault and to seek justice for the aggrieved persons”.
The Chairman, International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), Nigeria office, Mr Idi Haruna Ali, corroborated the claim, saying he had visited the scene and gathered information on the attack.
“Some of those who sustained injuries were from gun shots while others were attacked with other local weapons, while their property was destroyed.
“The information we gathered was that the chairperson ordered that a particular structure owned by the victims be removed and he refused and so on her way back from an event, a group of suspected thugs attacked them,” he said.
Yusha’u couldn’t be reached for comment, as her phone was switched off and the reporter tried severally without getting her.
