Two members of the National Guard were shot Wednesday just blocks from the White House, according to officials, as a spokesperson for Donald Trump said the president has been briefed on the “tragic situation.”

“Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington DC,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on X, without describing the health status of the two victims.

In a swift response, authorities placed the White House on lockdown, while Washington, D.C., police were able to detain the suspect.

The Associated Press reported, citing a knowledgeable source, that two National Guard members were injured in the shooting near the White House.

CNN also reported, citing sources, that the incident left “several people” injured in Washington.

The White House spokesperson confirmed that President Trump had been briefed on the shooting, which injured two National Guard members.

The press secretary announced that the White House had been placed under immediate precautionary lockdown.

Police in Washington confirmed they had successfully detained the suspected shooter and secured the scene as security agencies investigate the motive behind the attack, which occurred in one of the most sensitive and heavily secured areas in the United States.
