Veteran journalists ratify Kano Veteran Journalists League’s Charter
Members of the Kano League of Veteran Journalists(KALVEJ) on Wednesday ratified and adopted the Charter establishing the league.
The Kano Veteran Journalists League is being established through a joint effort by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Kano State Ministry of Information to mentor younger journalists, uphold professional ethics, and preserve the history and integrity of the profession in Kano.
A committee was inaugurated in August 2025 to design the league’s structure, with its draft charter reviewed in late 2025, signaling significant progress towards its operational launch as a guiding force for media practice in the state.
The meeting coordinated by an aide to the state’s Commissioner for Information, Malam Auwalu Mu’azu at the Tahir Guest Palace,Kano, featured discussions,comments, observations and scrutiny by members of the union drawn from various segments of the journalism profession, including the academia.
Observations in the charter which turned out to be the League’s Constitution,included absence of clauses to take care of welfare, gender representation and mode of funding for the league.
After extensive deliberations,it was agreed that all the issues raised would be channeled to the Constitution Drafting Committee/Secretariat for consideration.
In his remarks, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Wayya, said that league was not an appendage of the State Ministry of Information.
Wayya also said that the league was an independent body which had a relationship with the ministry on professional basis.
At the end of the discussions, a motion was adopted for that the Constitution Drafting Committee to continue to run the affairs of the league for the next one year, pending the election of substantive executives.
The Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Ahmed Aminu,thanked the gathering for giving members of the body the mandate to continue to steer its affairs for the one-year period.
Aminu pledged that the issues raised, especially those concerning welfare for members would be addressed in the constitution.
