Yobe Govt Moves to Address Welfare of Tertiary Institution Workers

From Muhammad Maitela, Damaturu

The Yobe State Government has received reports from fact-finding committees established to review the remuneration, allowances and welfare of staff of state-owned tertiary institutions.

Receiving the reports on behalf of the state government, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Mohammed Goje, assured the committees and affected workers that the recommendations would receive serious consideration.

Goje said workers’ welfare remained a priority of the Buni administration, particularly the need to improve conditions of service in the state-owned tertiary institutions in a fair and sustainable manner.

“The government has a strong interest in addressing issues affecting the welfare of our staff and improving conditions of service across our tertiary institutions. We will carefully study these recommendations and work towards a realistic and sustainable framework for implementation,” the SSG said.

The reports cover the welfare and remuneration packages of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) at Yobe State University (YSU).

The committees also reviewed the implementation of the 2024 circular on the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTA), Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and other earned allowances for staff of the state’s seven tertiary institutions.

Presenting the reports, the Chairman of the committees and Commissioner for Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, said the committees had carefully examined the issues presented to them before compiling their findings and recommendations.

Prof. Kawuwa expressed appreciation to Governor Buni for entrusting the committees with the responsibility.

The SSG commended members of the committees for their diligence and commitment, urging them to continue supporting government efforts to address challenges confronting the state’s tertiary education sector.

The reports are expected to guide further government decisions on remuneration, allowances, earned entitlements and other welfare-related matters affecting staff of Yobe State-owned tertiary institutions.

The development forms part of the Buni administration’s broader efforts to strengthen the education sector and create a conducive environment for teaching, learning and research.
