Trump unperturbed as Democrats win big in US Midterm Elections

President Donald Trump says he is unperturbed by the results of the US 2026 Midterm Elections which gave the Democrats control over both chambers of the Congress.
In an interview with The New York Times, he said he was “absolutely willing to accept those results”, adding: “We’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out.”
The Elections had given the Democrats control of both chambers of Congress, flipping seats in traditionally Republican strongholds as voters deliver a sweeping rebuke to Trump and his party.
The victories mark a dramatic reversal of the political balance in Washington, ending Republican control of the Senate and House of Representatives and threatening to constrain Trump’s legislative agenda during the final two years of his term.
The Associated Press reported that Democrats won at least seven Republican-held Senate seats, including victories in traditionally conservative states such as Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The gains extended to the House, where Democrats flipped districts previously carried by Trump in the 2024 presidential election, including constituencies where the Republican president had secured margins of up to 18 percentage points.
The results came amid widespread voter dissatisfaction with the administration. The AP Voter Poll identified high prices, the economy, concerns over government corruption and the war in Iran among the issues shaping voters’ concerns. Many also appeared to blame the administration for rising costs and wanted Congress to exercise greater checks on presidential power.
Trump had made himself a central figure in the Republican campaign, urging voters to maintain the party’s control of Congress. Instead, the losses have left his administration facing an opposition-controlled legislature.
With Democrats now controlling both chambers, the party will have greater power to scrutinise the administration, conduct congressional investigations and challenge the president’s legislative priorities. A Democratic-controlled Senate will also have influence over the confirmation of senior government officials and federal judicial appointments.
Trump, however, said he was prepared to accept the election results and work with the incoming Democratic leadership.
The Democratic victory marks a significant shift in the political landscape, giving the opposition party greater authority to scrutinise the administration and challenge its policies during the remainder of Trump’s presidency.
For Trump, the results represent a major setback for a president whose party entered the elections controlling both chambers of Congress.
