Gunman shoots two people dead, wounds 18 others in U.S

A gunman has opened fire at people attending a block party in Detroit, United States, killing two people and injuring 18 others, the police said on Sunday.

The victims were attending a block party when someone opened fire at 2:25 a.m. on Sunday, July 7, 2024, in the area of Reno Street and Rossini Drive, reports Click On Detroit.

A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head and a 21-year-old man killed by a bullet to his back, according to the newspaper.

The gunman was also injured in the shooting, the police said.

The victims range in age from 17 to 28 years.

The Detroit News reports that a large number of policemen was at Rossini Drive on Sunday morning, some bagging shoes left by people who ran from the scene.

Police cars on Rossini at Reno Street blocked people from entering the street, but about a dozen residents stood nearby on Wish Egan Field watching officers investigate.

One of them was Michael Pope, 21, who said he was at the block party with hundreds of other people when he heard gunshots at about 2 a.m.

The newspaper quoted Pope as saying that “Once I heard shooting, I just took off running. Everybody took cover, stampeding over people. … As I’m running, it’s people literally trying to jump over my back to get past me, to get over me because it was so many people running outside in the same direction, backyards, everywhere.”

According to Pope, he saw a man got shot in the chest and a woman got shot in the knee.

“It wasn’t a lot of blood coming from her knee, little small drizzles, but it was still a gunshot wound and she was panicking off looking at the gunshot wound. Crazy world. Crazy city,” he said.

On June 22, 2024, another mass shooting at a grocery store in Arkansas left three people dead and 10 others injured.
