Hunger: Bala Mohammed says reforms not working

Gov Bala Mohammed

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed on Thursday told President Bola Tinubu that the federal government monetary and fiscal policies are not working, as such should be discarded.

The governor said at the launch of the Nigeria Development Update in Abuja that the government should not be dogmatic but heed to the reality of the failure of its policies and reforms, which have thrown the country into hardship.

Governor Mohammed highlighted the plight of ordinary Nigerians due to the failed government policies, warning that hunger and economic hardship have created a volatile situation in the country, such that those in position of authority now face existential danger of being lynched by frustrated citizens.

“When the reforms started, the sub-nationals supported the President. But now, the macroeconomic policies causing inflation need to be reconsidered. There is hunger, people are suffering, and Nigerians are not benefitting from these reforms,” he emphasised.

Governor Mohammed noted that efforts being made were very insufficient to address the widespread hunger in the country.

“What are you doing to reduce hunger? We must help the people cope. The purchasing power of the people has drastically diminished. My brother Cardoso, these policies are not working. They need to be reviewed. Let’s not resort to blackmail,” he added.

On electricity, he said that the tariff was too high and ought to be reviewed.

“What about power? The tariffs are so high that people cannot afford to pay. We are on the brink of being lynched. These policies are not working. We must review them,” the Bauch state governor stressed.
