Adamawa, Borno Assemblies To Support Establishment Of Social Protection Agency

Borno and Adamawa Houses of Assembly have expressed commitment to accelerate the establishment of social protection agency to cater for destitute and vulnerable persons.
The Syndicate reports that 20 lawmakers from the two states were on a two day learning visit to Jigawa state on social protection programme.
The visit was put together by the federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, and the European Union.
The field trip was for the lawmakers to learn from Jigawa’s experiences, which has since passed the law on social protection and set up necessary structures and policy guidelines.
Alhaji Kotoko Alhaji Ali, the Borno Deputy Speaker, in an interview with The Syndicate in Dutse, promised action that would fast track the establishment of a social protection agency in Borno state.
“We are here in Jigawa state to study and learn how social protection programmes are implemented and working. We are really impressed and satisfied with the programmes’ benefits to vulnerable and less privileged people particularly people with disabilities.”
“It is a very good project which is dealing with poverty and support to vulnerable social economic lives. For a state like Borno where suffering for insurgency has resulted in a lot of Internally Displace People camps, the programme would help a lot in improving social and economic lives of the people, including the destitute and vulnerable,” the deputy speaker said.
Also, the Deputy Speaker of Adamawa Assembly, Muhammed Buba, said the legislature would support the implementation of the social protection programme in Adamawa state.
He said, “For the first time I saw the people who benefited from the project and it has positively transformed their lives during our visit to Kiyawa here in Jigawa state. I saw the reality of their situation and I am impressed with the good outcome.
“As a member representing my constituency, and as public officers, we will not hesitated in making move to introduce the programme and establish the agency for effective implementation.”
Buba said they had interacted with members of the Jigawa state House of Assembly, and has collected a copy of the law. “We will go and study the law and do the needful.”
