APC Holds First NEC Meeting In 2 Years After El-Rufai’s Criticisms
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to hold its first National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in two years on Wednesday.
The meeting will hold amidst criticisms that the APC has jettisoned its rules of holding quarterly meetings of its various organs.
One of such criticisms came from a founding member of the party and former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
“I am the founding member of the APC. But frankly, I no longer recognise the APC. No party organ has met in two years — no caucus, no NEC, nothing. I don’t even know if it is a one-man show. It is a zero-man show.
“Although I’m a founding member, the party has left me behind. We wanted to build a progressive party that would fight corruption, revive the economy, and restore security for Nigerians. That was our goal. But where is the APC now? I no longer recognize it. It’s left me behind. I still believe the primary purpose of political engagement in Nigeria remains to fix the economy, restore security, and fight corruption. But those issues are still unresolved,” he said.
However, it is not certain if there will be any dramatic decision taken during the first NEC meeting convened by the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, since assuming duty on August 3, 2023.
The meeting on Wednesday is scheduled to receive the party’s budget proposal for 2025, review audited account, receive briefing on Ganduhe’s stewardship, including the elections in Edo and Ondo states, as well as preparation for the November governorship election in Anambra, and other financial and administrative matters.
“It is just a tea party where nothing unusual will be discussed,” a party official said.
There have been speculations about Ganduje’s likely exit and election of a new APC National Chairman, but the official dismissed the insinuation, saying, ” it is not going to happen.”
The Syndicate reports that the Wednesday NEC meeting at the APC national secretariat will be preceded by a National Caucus meeting on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa banquet hall in Abuja.
