In a post on its official Facebook page, ASUU disclosed that the deal was reached on December 23, 2025, and is subject to review every three years.Under the new agreement, a 40 per cent salary increase for academic staff and significant improvement in pension benefits were provided.The deal also provided that professors will now earn pensions equivalent to their salary after retirement at the age of 70.The agreement also has new funding framework for public universities, with dedicated allocations for research, libraries, laboratories, equipment, and staff development.
A National Research Council is proposed to support research activities, with funding set at a minimum of one per cent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.
Other provisions include the strengthening of university autonomy, academic freedom, election of academic leaders such as deans and provosts but restricted to professors.
The government is expected to extend the negotiations to other university unions to promote stability.
