Defence Headquarters Denies Coup Story
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed an online newspaper report of an attempted coup to oust President Bola Tinubu as entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace.
The DHQ issued the denial in a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director Defence Information.
It urged Nigerians to disregard what it called “the falsehood being circulated by the purveyors of misinformation and enemies of our nation”.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement added.
The report by Sahara Reporters, an online publication, had insinuated that the cancellation of the parade for the 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an attempted military coup.
The report made reference to a recent DHQ press release announcing the arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation for professional misconduct.
According to the DHQ, the ongoing investigation of sixteen officers is a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism within the ranks.
“An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings would be made public,” it added.
The DHQ explained that the cancellellation of the 65th independence anniversary parade was to allow the President to attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country, and allow members of the Armed Forces to sustain the momentum on the fight against terrorism, insurgency and banditry.
