The Ministry of Defence has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged detention and maltreatment of a Nigerian Navy personnel, Seaman Abbas Haruna for more than six years.
A statement from the ministry on Monday said the investigation was orders by Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence.
The issued by the minister’s media aide, Ahmad Dan-Wudil said all issues raised by the detained personnel’s wife will be investigated.
Haruna’s wife, Hussaina, had appeared on a television programme where she narrated how a senior naval officer ordered the detention and maltreatment of her husband for six years just because he left his collegues to observe prayer.
Netizens have mounted stringent call for justice since the video of the interview went viral.
“Our armed forces are built on honour, discipline, and justice. No officer serving this nation should face undue hardship or wrongful treatment,” the statement added, and assured that the case will be thoroughly investigated, and the truth uncovered.
According to the statement, all military personnel, regardless of rank, deserve fair and respectful treatment.
“Seaman Abbas Haruna’s rights will be protected throughout the investigation, and any breach of protocol will be addressed promptly and decisively.
“The ministry remains committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring that no officer or civilian faces unfair treatment or harassment,” it added.
