Federation Cup: Elkanemi Warriors beat Shooting 1-0, advance to quarter finals
Elkanemi Warriors Fc of Maiduguri has advanced to the quarter final of the ongoing Federation Cup after beating 3SC of Ibadan in the round of 16 on Wednesday in Abuja.
The warriors will play Inter Lagos who defeated Ikorodu Fc via penalty after a 1-1 draw.
Elkanemi warriors engaged the Oluyole warriors with caution to drag the first half of the match to goalless after many dangerous penetrations.
On resumption of the second half, the warriors rediscovered their possession prowess over their opponents to control the match after some changes by Coach Aliyu Zubairu.
Several incursions by 3SC into the warriors defence was effectively checked by the defence line.
What would have been Elkanemi’s first goal was blocked by the 3SC players while a clear chance to break the deadlock by Muktar Ismail landed in the hands of shooting goalie.
However, warrior’s AlAmin Umar buried a through pass by Ismail into the net for the only goal of the match in the 83 minute.
The Oluyole warriors reverted to long thrust but that didn’t help as they run out of time to end the match 1-0 in favour of Elkanemi warriors.
In a post match interview, Elkanemi warriors gaffer, coach Aliyu Zubairu expressed confidence in the team.
“We will take one match at a time and that way we are shaping our players for the Super 8,” he said, adding that the team has been adequately motivated by Governor Umara Zulum.
