The Director-General of Adamawa State Poverty Alleviation and Wealth Creation Agency, Mr Michael Zira says five people who injected fake names into the agency’s poverty alleviation register have been arrested by the police.
Zira said in an interview in Yola that the agency has been sanitising its register of potential beneficiaries and other activities to ensure that only those genuinely qualified benefit from its poverty alleviation programmes.
He said apart from the five arrested, the agency uncovered and destroyed 7,001 fake registration forms, and blocked 1,560 potential beneficiaries due to some “dubious tendencies”.
The Director-General said in spite of the setbacks, the poverty alleviation agency has concluded preparations for the disbursement of N5 billion to 100,000 beneficiaries in December.
He said that various steps taken by the administration of Governor Umar Fintiri have reduced the state poverty index from 74% to 60%.
According to him, 50,000 poor people have received financial support over the last six years of Fintiri administration, with 10,000 citizens empowered in the first round, and 40,000 supported in 2025.
