Gov. Buni Pushes for Security, Climate Action in Lake Chad Basin

Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the Lake Chad Governors’ Forum, Mai Mala Buni, has chaired a meeting of the forum with the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) officials in Ndjamena, Chad.
, marking a milestone in regional collaboration.
This is contained in a statement signed by Mamman Mohammad, DG Press and Media affairs to Governor Buni, on Wednesday.
He said that the forum remains committed to advancing peace, stabilization, and prosperity of the region.
He highlighted resolutions from the fifth Forum meeting in Maiduguri, which centered on security and cooperation, humanitarian response, sustainable development and climate resilience.
Governor Buni outlined critical agreements, including enhancing the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF)’s operational capacity, accelerating cross-border infrastructure development, mobilizing finance through the special Multi-Partner Delivery Fund and nexus Funding Facility to supporti community-based reintegration and reconciliation.
To tackling emerging threats, the Forum reaffirmed its focus on youth deradicalization, stemming illicit arms trade and ecological degradation.
The forum chairman welcomed the validation of the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience, and the launch of key initiatives like the Support Project for the Restoration of the Lake Chad Basin’s Ecological and Economic Functions and the LCBC-anchored Early Warning System.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the reconstruction of the critical road Dikwa-Ngala and Bama-Banki roads, under the Dangote Tax Credit Scheme.
He assured that the Forum remains committed to expanding reintegration programmes, and advocating for renewed donor support for stabilization, particularly in Niger Republic.
Governor Buni urged the LCBC to strengthen its central coordination role, harmonize regional investment efforts and enhance joint monitoring and accountability mechanisms.
With the rainy season approaching, he stressed the need for regional agricultural development to enhance food sufficiency and economic growth, and reinforce security in the region.
Both the Governor of Ndjamena, Amina Kodjiana and LCBC Executive Secretary, Amb. Nuhu Mamman praised Buni’s leadership, pledging full support to advance regional stability and security.
