Governor’s Aide Worries Over ‘Very Dirty’ Condition Of PHCs, LG Secretariats In Jigawa

An aide to Governor Umar Namadi has expressed concern over the “very dirty” condition of primary health centres and clinics, as well as local government secretariats in Jigawa State.
Malam Isah Surajo, the Technical Adviser to the governor on Healthcare Services expressed the concern while distributing hospital consumables to Heads of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Department of the 27 local government councils in the state.
He said that the situation must be reversed and challenged the heads of WASH to live up to their responsibilities by enforcing good sanitary practices in their respective areas.
“It is your responsibility to ensure and enforce good sanitary condition in your respective areas, your job is not limited to coordinating the monthly environmental sanitation exercise but also ensuring cleanliness of all public places in the state.
“Environmental sanitation is very, very important, it’s an everyday activity; the poor sanitary condition of such places and medical facilities can be risky to all the inhabitants, particularly children. It is exposing them to so many dangerous communicable diseases.
“Environmental sanitation and hygiene should not stop at our individual abodes, it involves our working and business places. This is important and necessary as we are spending reasonable hours in those places everyday. So lets not be endangering our health,” the governor aide added.
He advised them to work with PHC managers to enhance sanitation in the health facilities.
“We know there are environmental health workers at every primary healthcare facility, but where there is need for assistance, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and respective local government councils’ chairmen should give necessary contribution to make our clinics clean and interesting.”
On the items distributed, the governor’s aide warned against mismanagement, saying that their utilisation will be monitored.
