Group To Drag Kaduna Electric To Court Over Blackout
The Eagle Brain Youth Transformative and Development Initiative says it will drag Kaduna Electric to court to seek compensation for customers over the current total blackout that has affected electricity consumers under the company’s franchise.
The group called for collective action by customers of the electricity distribution company, so as to seek legal redress for the financial losses incurred during the blackout in line with the provisions of the 2005 Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Act.
Eagle Brain said on its part, it will take legal action against Kaduna Electric for damages suffered by its members during the power outage.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a just and progressive society, where the rule of law and social justice prevail.
It condemned the ongoing industrial action by workers of the electricity distribution company, which has left millions of homes and businesses in Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi states in darkness for days.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Daniel Ejembi, the group also criticised the handling of the crisis by the management, saying they have prioritised profit over workers’ welfare and public service.
The shut down by workers has entered its fifth day on Friday as the workers and management of Kaduna Electric failed to agree on contending issues, including the mass sack of workers.
Beyond the economic impact, the group raised concerns about the security risks posed by the prolonged blackout, particularly in areas already plagued by kidnapping and banditry.
