The Hadejia Emirate Zakat Committee in Jigawa State has distributed N1.072 billion Zakat to 185,000 needy people in the emirate this Islamic year.

The Syndicate reports that Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and an obligatory charity. It requires Muslims to give a portion of their wealth to the poor and needy.

The purpose of Zakat is to purify one’s wealth and soul, help the poor and needy, and promote economic growth and social justice in the society.

A statement made available to The Syndicate by Malam Muhammad Garba Talaki, Public Relations Officer of Hadejia Emirate Council, said that Zakat distributed included cash, farm produce, and livestock given out by Muslims in the 27 districts of the emirate.

According to the statement, the details were made available by the Secretary of the committee, Engr. Isma’ila Garba Barde while presenting the committee’s report to the Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji  Adamu Abubakar Maje at his palace in Hadejia.

The statement indicated that in the 2023/2024 collections made by the committee, only N300 million worth of Zakkat was received.

“This time the collection tripled as a result of bumper harvest and improvement in collection strategies by the committee.”

Guri District made the highest collection amounting to ₦105.7 million worth of the Zakat proceeds, followed by Auyo district, N104.07 million; and Jabo district, N100.02 million.

The statement explained that the proceeds were to the poor and needy persons. Orphans, widows, the elderly, and People Living With Abilities, among others, based on Islamic teachings.

Receiving the report, the Emir commended the committee and other stakeholders for their efforts and hardwork.

In recognition to their efforts, the Emir honoured the three district heads with award of excellence and urged them to continue with the good work.
