International Toilet Day: JISEPA, UNICEF train 170 shit business operators in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) in collaboration with United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), has trained 170 shit business operators in the state on safe hygiene techniques to protect themselves and the environment.
The trainees, drawn from all the 27 local government areas in the state, were trained in four designated centers in Dutse, Gumel, Hadejia and Kazaure.
Also included in the training were WASH and JISEPA’s operation unit staff from the 27 local government areas.
Managing Director of JISEPA, Adamu Sabo said the training was not only to safeguard those in the shit business, but also public health.
He added that the WASH and JISEPA staff were also trained on monitoring skills and enforcement of environmental protection standards.
“The two day training aims to improve their business due to its paramount importance, as these people fill a very big vacuum in the society, because their work is all about ensuring hygienic environment in the communities” Sabo said.
According to him, those trained were registered and issued certificates to run the shit business.
He then commended Governor Umar Namadi for his support to the agency, including efforts at sustaining the state’s open defecation free status.
In his remarks, UNICEF WASH Specialist, Dr Uba Lawal assured more support to the agency, and commended the governor’s effort in ensuring that the state remains open defecation free.
