Jigawa Empowers Women Recovered from VVF

The Jigawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the Jigawa State Ministry of Health, today celebrated the successful treatment and discharge of women recovering from Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) at Jahun General Hospital.
The event highlighted not only the medical recovery of these women but also their empowerment and reintegration into society.
Hajiya Hadiza T. Abdulwahab, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, commended the collaboration that made this achievement possible, focusing on restoring the dignity and economic independence of VVF survivors.
The Honourable Commissioner presented ten thousand naira to each beneficiary, a spaghetti-making machine, and a sack of flour to promote self-reliance and income generation.
She praised the women’s patience, resilience, and creativity during their hospital stay, where they engaged in producing local hand fans, hats, and other handmade items.
Honourable Jamilu Danmalam, Chairman of the Jahun Local Government Council, reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to supporting healthcare initiatives.
Represented by the Vice Chairman of the Council, Honourable Rabi’u Salisu, the Chairman announced a donation of One Million Naira to assist the discharged women, emphasizing ongoing collaboration to tackle public health challenges.
Alhaji Aminu Dan Malam, the District Head of Aujara, congratulated the women on their recovery and encouraged them to adhere to medical advice and prioritize their health.
Healthcare experts at the event stressed the importance of early access to quality maternal healthcare services and skilled birth attendance in preventing VVF, a condition that can arise from prolonged obstructed labor and childbirth complications.
Beneficiaries and their husbands shared emotional testimonies about the physical, social, and psychological challenges they faced before treatment, expressing gratitude to the Jigawa State Government, MSF France, healthcare workers, and partners for restoring their health and confidence.
The ceremony concluded with renewed calls for sustained investment in maternal health services, community awareness, and women’s empowerment programs. Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening partnerships that improve healthcare outcomes and provide hope for women affected by VVF across Jigawa State.
