Ademola Lookman scored a brace on Saturday as the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 2-0 to reach the quarter-final stage of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Eagles opener was in the 36th minute when Victor Osimhen showed great vision to find Ademola Lookman with a cheeky pass inside the box.
Lookman’s first-time shot was precise as it sailed into the right side of the Cameroonian goal.
Earlier, the Nigerian side had scored in the ninth minute but the goal was ruled offside after VAR review.
The ball had rebounded and arrived at the feet of Semi Ajayi just outside the box, who fired a brilliant shot inside the right post. His celebration was cut shot as the goal was overruled for offside.
In the 56th minute, a decent effort by Lookman from a close-range free kick flew narrowly over the crossbar.
The Super Eagles pressure continued and in the 86th minute, Ola Aina’s strike from the edge of the box was blocked and cleared by Cameroonian defenders.
However, in the 90th minute, Lookman scored his brace to give the Eagles a comfortable 2-0 lead after receiving a clever pass from Calvin Bassey.
Lookman stepped inside his man on the edge of the box and whipped a tremendous shot into the right side of the goal to send Cameroon out of the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
Nigeria will now face Angola which breezed into the quater finals with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Namibia.
