NCC working on new regulations to strengthen telecom industry
Abuja — The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is developing a new roadmap to strengthen rregulations and ensure quality telecom service in the country.
The Executive Vice-chairman, NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta said in Abuja on Tuesday that regulatory instruments will be unveiled to enhance services.
These, he said include data protection regulations, and guidelines on corporate governance, quality of service and commercial satellite.
Danbatta said that the sector was at the forefront of innovation and advancements in technology, as such there is the need for review of existing regulatory instruments.
According to him, this would ensure seamless communication and connectivity, thereby creating enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
“With the laudable advancements in the sector comes great responsibility on the part of government to ensure that there exists an enabling environment for the industry to thrive, through the introduction and amendment of key regulatory instruments,” Danbatta said.
In her remarks, the Director, Legal and Regulatory Services, NCC, Helen Obi said the development of subsidiary legislations by the Commission would address several significant areas, in line with Sections 70 to 72 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
She said the plan was to ensure that the industry continues to evolve and thrive, based on highest standards of service.
Obi said that the amendment of the 2013 Quality of Service Regulations, was to enhance the standards of seservices offered to consumers.
She said stricter performance standards, more robust monitoring mechanisms and transparent reporting systems would be introduced to improve overall customer experience.
“More importantly, these changes will also drive operators to enhance their networks and services through efficient deployment and network optimization processes.
“Clearly, these expectations will ultimately foster a culture of continual improvement which is essential for the competitiveness and vitality of our industry,” Obi said.
