NEAZDP launches large-scale fumigation against Mosquito in Yobe

The North East Arid Zone Development Programme (NEAZDP), has commenced a large-scale fumigation campaign to control the spread of mosquitoes in nine local government areas (LGAs) of Yobe state.
The campaign also includes the sensitization of residents on the importance of sanitation, use of mosquito nets, and environmental cleanliness.
The NEAZDP initiative, supported by the nine LGAs, is part of efforts to curb the increasing cases of malaria in the state.
The Syndicate reports that the official flag-off ceremony was held on Thursday in Gashua, headquarters of Bade Local Government Area.
The mosquito fumigation campaign will cover Bade, Bursari, Geidam, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Machina, Nguru, Yunusari, and Yusufari LGAs.
It targets mosquito breeding sites, public facilities, and residential areas to reduce the prevalence of malaria in the benefiting communities.
The Programme Manager, NEAZDP, Dr. Mulima Idi Mato, said the exercise as part of the agency’s ongoing commitment to promoting public health and rural development, and commended Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration for its sustained support to NEAZDP’s integrated rural development programmes.
He explained that malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity in the state, stressing that fumigation, combined with proper hygiene and environmental management, will significantly reduce the health risks.
Speaking on behalf of the nine local councils, the Vice Chairman of Bade LGA, Abdullahi Sheriff Zachi, applauded NEAZDP for the proactive initiative and called on residents to not only support the exercise, but also embrace best hygiene and sanitation practices to ensure sustainable malaria prevention.
Also, stakeholders at the event pledged their support for the programme, noting that it would not only protect households from malaria but also enhance productivity by reducing the burden of sickness in rural communities.
The programme attracted local council officials, environmental health officers, community leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups, and other partners.
The Syndicate also reports that some of the residents expressed happiness with the exercise, saying Malaria has remained a serious health challenge in the area.
They praised the NEAZDP for varioud community development interventions which are making real difference in the lives of the people, including rural dwellers.
