Nigeria must explore alternative sources to fund education – Speaker
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen says Nigeria must explore alternative sources to fund education as government alone lacks the capacity to do so effectively.
The Speaker made the call in a speech during the combined 31st and 32nd Annual General Meeting of Zaria Education Development Association (ZEDA).
He said that funding the education sector has remained a critical issue in the country, adding that “to build a stronger Nigeria, we must explore alternative funding sources such as Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and endowment funds.
“Countries like Japan, Singapore, and Denmark have shown us that investing in human capital leads to national progress, and we must do the same.”
Tajudeen said four new educational institutions will be set up in Zaria soon.
“Zaria, with its rich educational heritage, continues to be a beacon of knowledge in Nigeria. As a proud representative of the Zaria Federal Constituency, I am committed to enhancing our educational landscape.
“Through my efforts, we have secured key institutions, including a Federal College of Education, a College of Health Sciences, a National Open University campus, and a College of Legal Studies.
“Once fully operational, these institutions will bring immense educational and socio-economic benefits to our people,” the Speaker said.
He however said that all stakeholders must not overlook the challenges ahead.
“Issues such as out-of-school children and the quality of basic education require urgent attention,” he added.
The Speaker commended Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for taking proactive steps in addressing these concerns, especially with the construction of over 62 new secondary schools.
“Looking ahead, ZEDA must embrace digital innovation to improve learning outcomes, teacher training, and access to resources.
“In the House of Representatives, we remain committed to advancing universal basic education and integrating innovative reforms that will shape a brighter future,” the Speaker emphasised.
He appreciated the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, for his unwavering commitment to ZEDA’s vision.
“Together, we will continue to nurture the legacy of education in Zaria and beyond,” Tajudeen assured.
