The Nigeria Labour Congress has convened an emergency meeting over the arrest of its President, Joe Ajaero by operatives of the Department of State Services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Monday.
Ajaero, who is being investigated for treason and terrorism, was on his way to London when he was arrested.
“The Congress is currently holding a closed-door meeting to discuss the situation, and the outcome will be made public soon,” the NLC Head of Public Relations, Benson Upah, told newsmen.
The NLC had earlier characterised the arrest as a “brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation”, and demanded for Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release.
Meanwhile, NLC Counsel, Femi Falana, has said that Ajaero’s arrest by DSS operatives was not connected to the earlier invitation by the police on alleged terrorism financing.
Falana told newsmen in Abuja that the police had denied any link to the case before it.
“The invitation to Comrade Joe Ajaero by the police was rescheduled last week. I have contacted the police authorities, the arrest is not related to the police invitation.
“Comrade Ajaero was on his way to London to attend the ongoing TUC Conference when he was arrested at the airport this morning by the DSS. No reason has been provided for the arrest by the DSS.”
