Northern Governors, Service chiefs agree new options to tackle kidnapping
The close door meeting between Northern Governors’ Forum, the National Security Adviser and Service Chiefs has resolved to adopt new options to address the lingering security challenges in the region.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, told journalists after the meeting on Thursday in Abuja that they were concerned over the recent spate of kidnapping in the region.
He said the meeting reviewed the situation and agreed to adopt alternative options different from the what they had been doing before to tackle the problem.
Yahaya said the governors were disposed to supporting both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts to address the challenges.
“Already the military and all other security agencies have been doing their best.
“What we need to do is to change style, especially adding the non-kinetic approach, so that at the end of it, when we join the two we’ll have a better security situation in the country,” he said.
The meeting followed the resurgence of mass abduction of school children and other citizens in the region.
It came after terrorists on March 7, abducted 287 primary and secondary school students in Kuriga, Kaduna State.
There was also the abduction of 112 Internally Displaced Persons in Gamboru Ngala, Borno, and 15 Quranic school students in Sokoto state.
