The Jigawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), has tasked the State Government to provide timely support to farmers in the state to ensure bumper harvest in the 2026 farming season.
The NUJ stated in a communique at the end of its regular Congress in Dutse on Wednesday, that the government must ensure timely distribution of agricultural inputs and fertilizers to farmers to ensure food security.
“The Congress calls on the Jigawa State Government to expedite action in providing timely support to farmers ahead of the rainy season farming. This includes the prompt distribution of agricultural inputs, fertilizers, and extension services to avoid delays that could undermine food security and livelihoods in the state,” it said.
The union also tasked the government and residents of the state to put in place mechanism to prevent flooding in the state, ahead of the 2026 rainy season.
“The Congress urges the Jigawa State Government and the general public to intensify efforts in clearing drainages, waterways, and culverts across the state. With the rainy season fast approaching, proactive measures are necessary to prevent flooding and safeguard lives, property, and infrastructure,” it said.
The NUJ lauded the Jigawa State Government and security agencies for maintaining peace in the state and called for continued collaboration with communities to enhance early response to emerging security challenges, particularly in rural areas.
It also commended the State Government and the Jigawa State Pilgrims Welfare Board for the restoration of Hajj seat allocation to members of the NUJ after six years of suspension.
“This laudable gesture reflects a renewed commitment to inclusivity and recognition of the critical role journalists play in promoting transparency, accountability, and public enlightenment,” the union said.
The NUJ called for continued collaboration between the government, media practitioners, and stakeholders to foster an environment where credible information thrives and public trust is strengthened.
“The Congress in session emphasises that a vibrant and responsible media landscape remains indispensable to democratic growth and sustainable development. It therefore calls for continued collaboration between the government, media practitioners, and stakeholders to foster an environment where credible information thrives and public trust is strengthened.
“The Congress expressed optimism that with timely government intervention and collective responsibility from citizens, Jigawa State can mitigate the impact of the rainy season while ensuring food security and public safety.
The Union pledged to continue playing its watchdog role in promoting democracy, transparency, accountability, and development in the state.”
