Over 414,000 persons affected by Borno flooding- Official
The United Nations (UN) says over 414,000 persons are affected by the flooding in Borno State, while 37 others are confirmed dead.
Ann Weru, Head – Public Information, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Abuja, stated this in a Media Advisory on Thursday.
Weru said that the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, plans to address the media on the issue.
“We are pleased to invite you to a press briefing by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, on flooding across Borno State, which has affected over 414,000 people, according to data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as of 11 September 2024. NEMA’s records also show that 37 people have died, and about 58 people have sustained injuries.
“Access to hospitals, schools and markets has been hampered. Damage to infrastructure, including bridges, has been recorded. Evacuation of people in high-risk areas to safer ground is ongoing, amid concerns about the risk of disease outbreaks.
“This press briefing will provide an update on the current situation, as well as on the humanitarian response by the UN and its partners, in support of Government efforts.
“Mr Fall will visit areas impacted by the flooding in Maiduguri and meet with affected people, local authorities and humanitarian partners. Government officials, humanitarian partners, representatives of UN agencies and donors will join Fall at the press briefing,” she said.
