Police arrest 2 suspects for mischief, culpable homicide, grievous hurt in Jigawa

The police command in Jigawa State, has arrested two suspects in connection with two separate incidents involving mischief by fire, culpable homicide and causing grievous hurt in Gwaram and Dutse Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the state Police Public Relations Officer, stated this in a statement in Dutse.
Adam said that the first incident occurred on 29th September 2026 at about 2330hrs, in Gwaram LGA of the state.
“The first incident occurred on 29th September 2026 at about 2330hrs, when one Abbas Ibrahim ‘m’ age 27yrs of Nassarawa village, Gwaram LGA, who claimed to be of unsound mind, allegedly jumped into the residence of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu ‘m’ age 25yrs of the same address.
“The suspect allegedly poured petrol inside Basiru’s room and set it ablaze, resulting in serious burns to Basiru and his wife. The victims were subsequently taken by their relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. Unfortunately, Basiru Shuaibu succumbed to the injuries sustained and died while receiving treatment.
“Following the incident, police operatives commenced an investigation and arrested the suspect at Sara town, Gwaram LGA. The case is being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Dutse, while the suspect has since been arraigned in court for prosecution,” he said.
Adam said that the second incident happened on October 1 in Dutse LGA.
“In a separate incident in Dutse Local Government Area, which occurred on 1st October 2026 at about 0030hrs, one Lawisi Safiyanu ‘m’ age 20yrs of Chamo village, Dutse LGA, allegedly stabbed one Muhammad Abba ‘m’ age 25yrs of the same address with a knife following a dispute over the balance of five hundred naira (₦500) from the purchase of a mobile handset,” he said.
Adam said that investigation had revealed that the deceased purchased the handset from the suspect at N1500.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased had purchased the handset from the suspect for one thousand five hundred naira (₦1,500) and paid one thousand naira (₦1,000) but was unable to immediately pay the outstanding balance of five hundred naira (₦500). During the ensuing disagreement, the suspect allegedly used a knife to stab him.

“The victim was immediately rushed to Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital, Dutse, for medical attention, where he unfortunately died while receiving treatment.
“The suspect was arrested, and the exhibit connected to the case has been recovered. Investigation was completed. The suspect has been charged to court to face the full weight of the law.

“The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, psc, mnips, urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies.

“The Command assures the people of Jigawa State of its continued commitment to take firm and decisive action against criminal conduct and ensure that offenders are brought before the law,” he said.
