Police commence Operation Velvet to enforce Traffic Laws in Jigawa

The police command in Jigawa State has launched Operation Velvet, a special enforcement operation to clamp down on road users who violate traffic laws and regulations in the state.
SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the state Police Public Relations Officer, stated this in a statement in Dutse.
“Today, Monday, August 24, 2026, the Jigawa State Police Command has commenced Operation Velvet, a special enforcement operation aimed at clamping down on motorists and road users who violate extant road traffic laws and regulations across the state.
“The operation, which commenced in the Dutse Local Government Area, is designed to promote strict compliance with road traffic laws, enhance road safety, reduce traffic-related offences and accidents, and ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
Adam said that 17 vehicles were intercepted at the for contravening traffic laws.
“During the initial phase of the operation, seventeen (17) motor vehicles were intercepted for various violations of road traffic laws, including cover plate number, unauthorized use of tinted glass, and overloading. The affected motorists were apprehended by the enforcement team and subsequently charged before the appropriate court for prosecution in accordance with the law.
“The Command wishes to emphasize that Operation Velvet is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists but rather to ensure responsible driving, compliance with established traffic regulations, and the protection of lives and property on the roads.
“The operation will subsequently be extended to major towns and cities across the state, where motorists found violating road traffic laws will be arrested and made to face the full consequences of the law,” he said.
Adam quoted the State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Tijjani Murtala, as urging road users in the state to ensure strict compliance with traffic laws.
“The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, psc, mnips, therefore calls on motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle riders, and other road users to strictly comply with all road traffic laws, avoid reckless driving and other dangerous practices, and cooperate with security and traffic enforcement personnel during the operation.
“The CP further urges members of the public to support the initiative by adhering to traffic regulations and providing useful information on persistent violations that may endanger the lives and property of other road users.
“The Jigawa State Police Command remains committed to professional policing, public safety, the prevention of road traffic offences, and the protection of lives and property across the state,” he said.
