Ramadan: Kano Hisba Arrests 25 Eating In Public
Kano State Hisbah personnel have arrested 25 Muslims caught eating publicly in spite of the ongoing Ramadan fast.
The deputy commander of the Hisbah, Mujahid Aminudeen, told newsmen that 20 people were arrested for not fasting and five for selling food.
“The operation which began on Saturday, will continue throughout the month. It is important to note that we don’t concern ourselves with non-Muslims,” the official said.
Mr Aminudeen said that the Hisbah command will not condone any “disrespect” to the month of Ramadan when Muslims are supposed to engage in fasting, supplication and prayer.
He said “it is heart-breaking that in such a holy month meant for fasting, adult Muslims would be seen eating and drinking publicly. We won’t condone that and that’s why we went out to make the arrests.”
In 2024, those arrested for eating in public were freed after the Hisbah personnel extracted guarantees from relatives or guardians that they would monitor and make sure they fast. Those arrested this year were not so lucky as they have been taken to court.
Aminudeen said all the 25 were charged before a Sharia court and would be punished accordingly.
