The medical team from King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh, successfully performed the heart transplant using a robot on a 16-year-old patient suffering from end-stage heart failure in September 2024.
The transplant procedure, which took two and a half hours, was led by renowned Saudi cardiac surgeon Dr. Feras Khaliel, who is head of Cardiac Surgery and director of the Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at KFSHRC.
The meeting with the Crown Prince was also attended by the Board Chairman of KFSHRC, Mazen Al-Rumaih, the CEO, Dr. Majed Al-Fayyadh, and Deputy CEO Dr. Björn Zoega.
During the reception, the Crown Prince congratulated the medical team and the leaders of KFSHRC on the historic achievement.
He praised the Saudi team’s competence and ability to innovate and achieve an unprecedented feat in the medical field.
Salman said that the first fully robotic heart transplant will contribute to enhancing human health in the Kingdom and the world.
