UN Honours Over 200,000 Nigerian Peacekeepers
The UN has praised the contributions of over 200,000 Nigerian troops to world peace as it marks the 77th anniversary of United Nations Peacekeeping Day.
At a ceremony at the UN House in Abuja, the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator. Mr. Mohamed Fall said Nigerian troops, police officers, and civilians have contributed to 41 peace missions under the UN, African Union, and the Economic Community of West African States across Africa and beyond.
Fall praised Nigeria for its unwavering support, active participation, and strong leadership in UN peacekeeping.
He emphasized the need for innovative strategies and enhanced regional partnerships to address the challenges of modern peacekeeping, noting that peacekeepers now face increasing threats from armed militias, criminal networks, and violent extremists.
Also, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa reaffirmed Nigeria’s and the Armed Forces’ commitment to international peace and security.
He commended Nigerian troops for their service under the UN flag, highlighting their honour and distinction in global operations.
The Syndicate reports that the event was concluded with a special Blue Beret and Blue Helmet parade, paying tribute to Nigerian peacekeepers, past and present, for their sacrifice and dedication.
