The Edo State Government has confirmed that all students of the University of Benin trapped in the collapsed three-storey building in Benin City have been successfully rescued, with no fatalities.

A statement on Saturday by Mr. Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media Projects, said investigation is underway to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse.

The building, located on Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road, beside the University of Benin, collapsed early Saturday morning during a downpour.

“The government confirms the collapse of a three-storey building on Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road, beside the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City.

“A rescue team was promptly deployed, and all trapped students have been rescued alive and are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement added.

According to the statement, no fatalities were recorded as of now, but rescuers are still at the site to clear the rubble and remove the part of the distressed building.

“The government has also ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and an audit of nearby buildings to assess their structural integrity,” it added.

The government appreciated the  emergency responders and community members who assisted in managing the situation.

“We commend the gallant work of the emergency responders and the good Samaritans in the community who helped manage the situation.”
