Akeredolu dies in Germany at 67
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State early on Wednesday died in Germany after a prolonged battle with Leukaemia.
An authoritative government source told the News Agency of Nigeria in Akure that the governor, 67, died in the early hours of Wednesday at the hospital.
“Yes, it is true. Governor Akeredolu died in the early hours of this morning,” the source said.
Akeredolu had returned to Nigeria in September after three months medical leave in Germany, but had stayed in Ibadan, a development that had generated public outrage.
Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, was re-elected governor in October 2020 and sworn in for a second term in February 2021.
The governor’s second term was plagued with difficulties ever since he went on medical leave overseas.
After spending seven months abroad, the 67-year-old politician came back to Nigeria in September and settled in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
On Wednesday, December 13, he proceeded on another medical leave and wrote a notice formally transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa who later assumed the responsibilities of the governor in full acting capacity.
