Women in leather goods production get N500m lifeline

Women engaged in leather goods production have received N500 million funding from the Federal Government.

The funding was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) during its meeting on Monday in Abuja.

The approved is part of government policy to support local manufacturing of leather goods and footwear, Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said after the meeting.

She explained that under the policy, women engaged in leather and footwear manufacturing will receive starter packs and grants from the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology.

According to her, women are playing a crucial role in the sector, and the policy is to give them substantial opportunity to excel.

“This is exciting for us because it encourages women’s participation in an industry with high potential for economic growth,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim said.

She added that the initiative would support women with the necessary tools to upscale their businesses and contribute to local production.

“We pushed for a portion of this intervention to be allocated to women, ensuring they have the necessary tools to scale their businesses and contribute to local production,” the minister added.
