FUGA Promotes Five to Professors, Five to Readers, 159 Others

The Governing Council of the Federal University Gashua (FUGA), Yobe State, has approved the promotion of 169 staff members across academic and non-teaching cadres, including five to the rank of Professor and five to the rank of Reader.
The Council also approved a one-year extension of the tenure of three principal officers of the university.
The decisions were taken at the Council’s 32nd Regular Meeting, held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Adamu Saleh, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal University Gashua.
The five Senior Lecturers promoted to the rank of Professor are Dr. Abatcha Melemi of the Department of Economics and Development Studies; Dr. Kabiru Mohammed and Dr. Aisha Ibrahim Ningi, both of the Department of History and International Studies; Dr. Sunday Alewo Omale of the Department of Business Administration; and Dr. Aina Babatunde of the Department of Mathematics.
Those promoted to the rank of Reader are Dr. Sulaiman Alhaji Dauda of the Department of Economics and Development Studies; Dr. Anslem Rimau Bako of the Department of Geography; Dr. Wanan Cornelius Terzungwe of the Department of Political Science; Dr. Sanusi Saheed Olakunle of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension; and Dr. Uche Viola Obiana of the Department of Home Science and Management.
The promotions to the ranks of Professor and Reader took effect on October 1, 2025, following favourable outcomes from the candidates’ external assessments.
Within the non-teaching cadre, the Council approved the promotion of Musa M. Musa Dagona from Principal Assistant Registrar to Deputy Registrar and Larama Mai Umar from Chief Accountant to Deputy Bursar, effective October 1, 2025, following favourable outcomes at their respective interviews.
The Council also approved the promotion of 65 academic staff to various ranks, 68 senior administrative, technical and professional staff to various positions, and the advancement of 26 junior staff to senior positions, all effective October 1, 2026.
The university stated that the promotions were intended to recognise academic excellence, research contributions, effective teaching, professional competence and dedicated service.
The VC, Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, on behalf of the university management, congratulated the newly promoted staff, particularly the Professors and Readers, and wished them continued success in their academic and professional careers.
He added that the Council had approved a one-year extension of the tenure of three principal officers: the Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Mamuda; the Bursar, Muhammad Ahmad Ali; and the University Librarian, Dr. Adam Gambo Saleh.
According to the statement, the extension was approved in accordance with Section 5(4) of the Federal University Gashua Act.
The provision empowers the Council, subject to satisfactory performance, to extend the tenure of a Registrar, Bursar or Librarian for an additional one-year period. Thereafter, the officer is required to relinquish the position and may be assigned other duties within the university.
The Council stated that the decisions formed part of its efforts to strengthen the university’s academic and administrative structures, promote career progression and enhance institutional efficiency.
