Yobe Intensifies Preparations for 2027 Hajj Airlift

The Yobe State Government has intensified preparations for the commencement of the 2027 Hajj airlift from the Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport in Damaturu, with emphasis on fulfilling outstanding operational, security and regulatory requirements.
The development followed a high-level meeting convened by the state government to assess the airport’s operational status, identify outstanding requirements and establish a coordinated framework for commencing Hajj airlift operations from the facility.
The meeting, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Mohammed Goje, was attended by representatives of relevant ministries, departments and agencies, airport management, contractors and security stakeholders.
The meeting reviewed the airport’s technical, operational, security and regulatory requirements and agreed on specific action points to be implemented ahead of the 2027 Hajj season.
According to a statement issued by Ibrahim Baba Saleh, Media Coordinator and Liaison Officer to the SSG, stakeholders were informed that the airport is operational and has obtained the necessary licences to support operations involving large aircraft.
However, airport management identified additional requirements, including improved water and firefighting systems, patrol and staff vehicles, an alternative power supply, and continuous training and certification of personnel in accordance with international standards.
Dr Goje emphasised the importance of early and coordinated planning, noting that preparations for the 2027 Hajj operation had already commenced at the national level.
The Commission has approved five air carriers for the 2027 Hajj: Air Peace, Flynas, Max Air, Saudi Air and UMZA Aviation Services. The commission stated that passenger allocations and airlift schedules would be developed in consultation with State Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and the approved operators.
The SSG called for sustained inter-agency collaboration and the prompt resolution of the identified requirements to ensure that the airport is adequately prepared for Hajj operations.
He said the commencement of Hajj airlift from Damaturu would represent a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructure development and expand the airport’s role beyond cargo operations.
According to him, Governor Mai Mala Buni remains committed to transforming the airport into a strategic economic asset capable of improving connectivity, supporting trade and pilgrimage services, and creating opportunities for Yobe and the wider North-East region.
Dr Goje commended the stakeholders for their commitment and assured them of the state government’s support in implementing the outcomes of the meeting and addressing the identified requirements.
