FG Commissions Study On Causes Of Maternal Death In Jigawa

The Federal Government has commissioned a study to unravel the common causes of maternal and child deaths in Jigawa State.
The Syndicate reports that the study is being undertaken by National Population Commission (NPC) and Federal Ministry of Health, FMOH.
A Federal Commissioner with NPC, Alhaji Garba Zakar told newsmen in Dutse that the exercise is going on in 34 clusters across the 23 local government areas of the state.
Zakar, who was represented by NPC state director, Alhaji Kassim D. Muhammad, expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far in the ongoing 2024 Verbal And Social Autopsy (VASA) Study.
He said the study will identif formal and informal factors associated with the high level of maternal and children deaths in the state.
According to him, the VASA study is a crucial survey designed to provide insights into the causes of under five and maternal deaths in communities, and generate valuable information that will shape health policies and interventions.
“The study is follow up to the 2014-2023 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, NDHS, that was concluded in May this year.
“They will be going back to the NDHS households to ask for information that will help the government understand and plan to address the biomedical and social causes of deaths of children under the age of five and women of reproductive age”.
“In Jigawa state, we have benefitted from the strong collaboration between the NPC, FMOH and our valued state partners to successfully implement health-related projects in the past, and we are confident that this collaboration will once again ensure success for the VASA Study”, he said.
Zakar said that the study, which began on November 4, will be concluded on December 15.
The commissioner appreciated the state government, partners, and traditional and religious leaders for their unwavering support, and urged residents to cooperate with the study teams.
