The Online Chapel of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has tasked its members to adhere strictly to professional ethics in their reportage, ahead of the 2027 General Election.This is contained in a communique issued at the Congress of the chapel held on Saturday at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano.
The Congress also urged members to uphold the NUJ Code of Ethics in their daily reportage.
“The Congress emphasised the need for members to strictly adhere to professional journalism ethics and uphold the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Code of Ethics, particularly in the coverage and reporting of political activities and elections,” it added.
The Congress deliberated on issues concerning welfare of members, professional ethics and financial sustainability of the chapel.
“The Congress deliberated extensively on issues concerning the welfare of members, professional ethics, financial sustainability, effective administration, members’ participation and the overall development of the Chapel.
“After extensive deliberations, the Congress made the following observations and resolutions:
“Unity and Cooperation: The Congress called on members to maintain unity, mutual respect and cooperation, stressing that the progress and development of the Chapel depend on the collective efforts of its members. Members were urged to work together and avoid actions capable of creating division within the Chapel.
“Responsible Election Reporting: Members were urged to maintain professionalism during election coverage and ensure that their reports promote peace, accuracy, fairness, accountability and the public interest. They were further advised to ensure accuracy, balance and responsible journalism in all reports published through their respective online media platforms.
“Two-Year Anniversary: The Congress unanimously approved the organisation of a two-year anniversary of the Chapel, replacing the earlier proposal for a one-year anniversary,” it added.
The Congress also recognised the importance of acknowledging individuals and institutions that support the development of journalism and contribute to the welfare of journalists in the state.
“Members’ Participation: The Congress stressed the need to strengthen members’ participation in Chapel activities and urged all members to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the organisation.
“Patronage of Chapel Activities: The Congress discussed the need to promote greater patronage of the Chapel’s office, programmes and official activities by members and relevant stakeholders.
“Regular Meetings and Reports: The Congress stressed the importance of holding regular meetings and commended the current leadership for presenting standard Secretariat and financial reports. Members were urged to actively participate in Congress meetings and other official activities of the Chapel.
“Commitment to Professionalism and Welfare: The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening unity among members, promoting professional journalism, upholding the NUJ Code of Ethics, and improving the welfare, capacity and professional development of online journalists in Kano State.
