Over 100 escape from Chad’s most protected prison
Over 100 prisoners have escaped from Mongo prison in Chad, the county’s most protected prison facility.
Sources said three of the prisoners were killed in an exchange of fire with the prison authorities during the jail break.
The jail break occurred on Friday night and a manhunt for the escaped prisoners had commenced.
Reports indicate that the prisoners attacked the superintendent office at about 9pm and looted arms with which they confronted the officers on duty at the facility.
A huge exchange of gunfire occurred prompting the prison guards to call for reinforcement.
The governor of the region, Abdoulaye Ibrahim Siam, who mobilised the reinforcement was said to be among those injured.
A prison official told a news outlet, Tchad Info, that at least four people died in the attack while 132 prisoners escaped.
Justice Minister Youssouf Tom said the authorities were taking count to determine the number of prisoners who escaped and level of damage to the facility.
