‘I’m committed to gender inclusion, empowerment’ – Speaker

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajudeen has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to empowering women and advancing gender inclusion in Nigeria.

The Speaker made the commitment in a message to mark the 2025 International Women’s Day.

“The theme, “Accelerate Action,” is a timely reminder that we must move beyond rhetoric and take deliberate steps to elevate women in all spheres of life.

“Women are builders of homes, nurturers of children, and trailblazers in politics, academia, business, and beyond. Their role in shaping our society cannot be overstated.

“This is why I have consistently championed policies that protect the girl child, promote women’s participation in governance, and ensure their voices are heard at all levels,” Abbas added.

The Speaker said that the 10th House of Representatives, has taken concrete steps to advance the cause of women, including advocating for special seats for women in the National and State Assemblies, and supporting gender-focused legislation.

“We are committed to ensuring that women are not just participants but leaders in national development,” he stressed.

“Additionally, under my leadership, we have established two dedicated committees—the Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development and the Committee on Women in Parliament—to further strengthen advocacy and action for women’s inclusion.

“In my own office, I have also ensured that more women are given key roles, and I am proud of their outstanding contributions.

“As we mark this special day, I urge all stakeholders—government, private sector, and civil society—to intensify efforts in empowering women, because when women thrive, nations prosper.”
